Refuse To Be A Victim^® is a three to four hour crime prevention seminar, designed by the National Rifle Association, to provide common‑sense information geared toward awareness and avoidance of criminal attack. Certified instructors help seminar participants better understand criminal thinking and provide tips on maximizing home, automobile, telephone, technological, and personal security. Participants learn unbiased information about carjacking prevention strategies; self‑defense training options; and the use of devices such as pepper spray, mace and stun guns.

This safety awareness message has been presented in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Pepper spray enables you to defend yourself while keeping a safe distance from an attacker. A one second burst to the face will cause temporary blindness, choking, coughing, and nausea-bringing the attacker to his knees. The active ingredient in our spray is Oleoresin Capsicum (O.C.), commonly referred to as red pepper. When considering which pepper spray is most effective, one must consider the percentage of pepper being used and the heat rating of that pepper (measured in Scoville Heat Units or S.H.U.). All of our pepper sprays are two million S.H.U., which is the highest available. At 17% and two million S.H.U., our Street Wise pepper spray is the hottest, most powerful in the world. The Streetwise stun gun is a self defense device which disrupts the message the brain sends to the voluntary muscles. Simply touching an attacker with a stun gun for three to five seconds will deliver a high voltage shock causing loss of balance and muscle control, confusion, and disorientation bringing him to his knees and making him incapable of further aggressive activity. Full recovery takes about five to ten minutes and there is no permanent harm. Requires one 9 volt battery (not included). Streetwise brand stun guns have more features than any other stun gun on the market. Built-in 130 dB alarm: this stun gun offers you to levels of protection. At the first sign of danger you can activate an ear piercing alarm to scare off a potential attacker and summon help. If the alarm sound is not enough to deter the attacker, the stun gun may be used. Here are some frequently asked questions that may be helpful to your understanding of the Refuse To Be A Victim^® program.

Q: Is this a self-defense course?

A: It is a personal safety program that teaches strategies you can use to avoid situations where self-defense is required. This course focuses on proactive courses of action, rather than reactive. Criminals prefer easy targets. By making yourself more difficult to prey upon, you lessen your risk of criminal attack. That means having a personal safety strategy in place before you need it.

KLA Firearms Academy provides an extensive 1 day and 2 day hands on self defense course you must meet minimal age requirments to attend.

Q: Who can attend the seminars?

A: The Refuse To Be A Victim^® seminar covers topics that pertain to both men and women. The information covered is appropriate for young adults to senior citizens. In addition, the Refuse To Be A Victim^® program materials also include a special teaching module for parents which discusses tips for children ages pre-school to college. Q: Is there a fee, and what does it cover?

A: Seminar fees are $25.00 for each participant KLA Proudly dispurses a percentage of the proceeds from each seminar is awarded to various agencys accross the state to help battered women shelters and help fight child abuse. The fees also cover instructor time, and all materials distributed to seminar attendees, such as the Refuse To Be A Victim^® student handbook.

Seminars can also be held free of charge by applying for an NRA Foundation State Fund Committee Grant.

Avoid Conflict with Situational Awareness

Your state of situational awareness can help you avoid a potential conflict. See below for the various levels of situational awareness:

CONDITION WHITE –> Unaware:

- Oblivious to your surroundings
- Suitable for sheep and children

CONDITION YELLOW –> Aware:

- Heightened level of awareness
- Radar ON – aware of those around you & your environment
- “I may have to defend myself and my family today”

- Give corners some birth
- Use shop windows to casually monitor those behind you

DINING OUT

CONDITION ORANGE –> Alert:

- You are aware of a potential threat
- “If they do ______, I will do ______.”
- Have a plan
- Avoid the threat if possible

CONDITION RED –> Action:

- The decision has been made that action is imminent
- The state of readiness to fight or flight (freezing, submitting or posturing are not viable options)

Suggestions to enhance your daily situational awareness

DRIVING

- Do not stop at a red light or stop sign too close to the vehicle in front of you that you cannot see their rear tires Some criminals will box you in and rob you since you will not have enough room to pull away.
- Your vehicle is a potential weapon if you are attacked (from front or rear)
- Keep your doors locked and windows up if in a potentially dangerous area

WALKING

- Be aware of locations people can hide and surprise you

- Sit facing the entrance and most of the customers
- Be aware of all potential exits (including entrance to the kitchen)
- Do not get trapped by sitting on the inside of a booth

Summary

If you are not conditioned to doing these things, it may sound like someone who is paranoid. On the contrary, it will become second nature, enhances your situational awareness, and gives you reaction time if something happens. It is not being paranoid, rather prepared. Remember the saying, “Prior planning prevents poor performance.” In a short period of time, you will learn to enhance your situational awareness without others noticing. Don’t forget: if you see a potential conflict, AVOID IT.
